How to Run for Michigan Elected Office in 2024
Have you ever considered serving your community as an elected official in Michigan?
If so, now is the time to file papers with your local or County Clerk, and begin running your campaign. The local and statewide positions which are up for election in 2024 are listed below.
There are various requirements for deadlines, signatures or fees. It depends on which position you want to run for, and the population in your area. For all of the deadlines and fees, please click Signature and Aug-Nov Deadlines 2024.
The Democrat and Republican primaries are on August 6, 2024 when Michigan voters will select the top candidates for each position from each of the two parties. The top Democrat and top Republican for each position will run on Nov 5, 2024 against third party and independent candidates.
Third party candidates should check with their party officials for the requirements.
Other Important Deadlines for Candidates
The deadline for nominating petitions and affidavits for most partisan positions is April 23, 2024 at 4:00 pm;
The deadline for Independents (candidates without affiliation seeking partisan offices) is July 18, 2024 at 4:00 pm;
The deadline for local School Board positions and Village offices is July 23,, 2024. Village officers have terms that are staggered, so not all positions are up for election in 2024. Please contact your village office for details.

Positions Up for Election in 2024
- All township positions, including Township Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and Trustees;
- Some Village positions (terms are staggered and vary, depending on the Village);
- County Clerk, Commissioners, Sheriff, Prosecutor;
- Library boards for the City, Township, Village and District;
- School board positions, including Community College Trustees; State Board of Education; and Trustees for University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University;
- Judicial positions including Supreme Court Justice;
- State Senate, House, Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General.
